1.5 euro cents surprise milk price increase for Arla members puts them top of the league

Today Arla have announced a jaw dropping 1.5 euro cents price rise on its conventional and organic pools from May 1st which no one anticipated with the majority believing a stand on would be a result.

The increase is worth 1.36ppl on a manufacturing standard litre taking it to 32.79ppl whilst the equivalent liquid standard litre price will be 31.55ppl. (+1.31ppl)

Whether anyone likes it or not Arla are firmly driving GB farmgate milk prices and the gap between its members and others is widening each month.

The Muller liquid standard litre price for May remains at 27.25ppl (including the Muller Direct Premium) and has been at that level for 7 months. The gap between Muller and Arla is staggering at 4.3ppl for May based on a liquid standard litre equating to 16% difference.

Others in the precarious middle ground and milk brokerage are even further adrift at only 25p or thereabouts and one buyer has only just informed its suppliers what they received for March deliveries let alone April and May and for sure they will be quick to use spot milk prices as a reason to pay producers a crippling unsustainably low milk price.

As one Arla farmer commented to Ian this morning Arla farmers should feel like Top Class European footballers whilst others must feel like street beggars.

The Arla Member 1st April www.milkprices.com standard litre prices are as follows:

                                               Conventional                     Organic

Manufacturing                       32.79ppl                            41.15ppl

Liquid                                    31.55ppl
